Archibald
Cochran, 9th Earl of Dundonald (1749 - 1831)
Naval Officer and Chemical Manufacturer. Experiments on improved
methods of making sail cloth. Manufacturer of alkali, British
gum and white lead. Constructed at Culross, retorts for the distillation
of tar from coal. Between 1781 and 1812, took out 10 patents including
one for the covering of the hulls of ships with coal tar to prevent
the rotting of timbers (1785). Eventually bankrupted by his pursuit
of scientific activities.
